{"id":162,"date":"2026-08-11T22:20:24","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T22:20:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/proteus.aimath.org\/?page_id=162"},"modified":"2026-08-12T20:44:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-12T20:44:19","slug":"research-questions-and-model","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/proteus.aimath.org\/?page_id=162","title":{"rendered":"Research questions and model"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The PreTeXt-Runestone: Open Textbooks Engaging Undergraduates in STEM (PROTEUS) project is a collaborative project between the <a href=\"https:\/\/umich.edu\/\">University of Michigan<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/aimath.org\/\">American Institute of Mathematics<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/runestone.academy\">Runestone Academy<\/a>. The project seeks to answer the following questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>How do groups of textbook users (students, teachers, authors, and researchers) work together to write interactive questions designed to elicit multiple ways of students\u2019 thinking in classrooms?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>How do students and instructors use those interactive textbook questions in their classrooms?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>PROTEUS is organized around four open undergraduate mathematics textbooks, <a href=\"https:\/\/activecalculus.org\/\">Active Calculus<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apexcalculus.com\/\">APEX Calculus<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/linear.pugetsound.edu\/html\/fcla.html\">A First Course in Linear Algebra<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/understandinglinearalgebra.org\/home.html\">Understanding Linear Algebra<\/a>, each of which supports a &#8220;STAR&#8221; team consisting of Students who have taken the appropriate course, Teachers with experience teaching the course, Authors, and Researchers.  Each team is charged with developing content for their textbook following a design-based research process with rapid cycles of question development.<\/p>\n<p>\nEach of the four textbooks is authored in <a href=\"https:\/\/pretextbook.org\/\">PreTeXt<\/a>, and this work is supported by development from Rob Beezer, the founder and lead developer of PreTeXt.  The textbooks are housed on Runestone Academy, a Learning Analytics Platform developed and supported by Brad Miller.
